Fellows will be recognized at the ASPEN 2024 Nutrition Science & Practice Conference in March 2024. Fellows may use the “FASPEN” designation in their signature, which highlights their dedication to the field and nutrition support. ASPEN will provide multiple channels for Fellows to promote this accomplishment, including press release templates and letters for employers.
Eligibility
To be considered for the FASPEN designation, a candidate must be a current member of ASPEN in good standing and have been a member of ASPEN for the past 5 consecutive years. ASPEN members are eligible to be considered if they accumulate a minimum of 25 points in the criteria outlined below. The total point score will be considered during the selection process. ASPEN membership must be maintained to use the FASPEN designation. Sitting ASPEN Board of Director members are not eligible to apply during the term. Nominations for Class of 2025 will open in the fall of 2024.
Meeting the eligibility and criteria does not guarantee selection of this honor.
FASPEN Obligations

- Be a thought leader
- Support the ASPEN Rhoads Research Foundation
- Identify and sponsor future FASPEN candidates
- Participate in ASPEN programs sponsored by the FASPEN committee
- Follow ASPEN's Volunteer Code of Conduct
Criteria
Contributions to ASPEN (includes both past and present activities) (15 points maximum for eligibility); total point score will be considered during the selection process
- Serve on an ASPEN committee or task force or journal editorial board: 1 point per year
- Serve as chair of an ASPEN committee or task force: 2 points per year
- Serve as a member of the ASPEN Board of Directors: 2 points per year
- Serve as a Section leader: 2 points per year as chair, 1 point per year as chair-elect or other leadership council member
- Serve as a Board member of a local ASPEN chapter: 1 point per year of service
- Receive an award for an ASPEN local Chapter while serving on the Board: 1 point per award
- Present a poster at ASPEN Nutrition Science and Practice Conference: 1 point per poster for first & last authors, 0.5 points for co-authors
- Give an oral presentation at ASPEN Nutrition Science and Practice Conference or ASPEN chapter event: 1 point per presentation
- Participate as a webinar (or any virtual learning) presenter for ASPEN or a ASPEN chapter: 1 point per presentation
- Publish articles in JPEN or NCP: 2 points per article for first and last authors, 1 point for co-authors
- Serve as Editor-in-Chief of an ASPEN publication: 4 points per title
- Serve as an author of an ASPEN publication: 2 points per publication for first & last authors, 1 point for co-authors
- Serve as an author of an ASPEN guideline, standard, consensus recommendation or position papers: 2 points per publication for first & last authors, 1 point for co-authors
- Receive an ASPEN national award: 3 points per award
- Receive an ASPEN Rhoads Research Foundation grant: 2 points
- Years of ASPEN membership beyond 15 years (must be over the immediate past 15 years and must still be an active member): 5 points
Contributions to the clinical nutrition community (includes both past and present activities): (10 points maximum for eligibility); total point score will be considered during the selection process
- Participate as an oral presenter at another nutrition conference or event: 0.5 points per presentation
- Publish clinical nutrition articles in other peer-reviewed journals: 0.5 points per article for first, last & co-authors
- Publish clinical nutrition articles in newsletters or other publications: 1 point per article for first, last & co-authors
- Teach clinical nutrition in an accredited academic or university program as lead faculty or course coordinator/developer: 1 point per year up to 5 points maximum
- Serve in a nutrition-related preceptor role in an accredited academic or university program: 1 point per year up to 5 points maximum
- Participate in a federally-funded or foundation-funded research grant related to nutrition support: 1 for being a co-investigator or key personnel; 2 points for being the primary investigator
- Serve as a volunteer leader of another local, national, regional or international organization with ties to clinical nutrition: 1 point per volunteer role up to 5 points per maximum per organization
Certification: total point score will be considered during the selection process
- Certification specific to nutrition support: 2 point per certification
Sponsors and Referrals
Candidates are asked to provide the name of a current ASPEN Fellow to sponsor their application. If they do not know a current Fellow, ASPEN staff will assist with introductions. It is not guaranteed a sponsor will be found.
Candidates must provide a second contact for an additional recommendation. This person may be a current ASPEN Fellow, ASPEN member or a colleague who can attest to contributions by the individual.
Members of the ASPEN Board of Directors, members of the ASPEN Fellows Selection Committee and applicant's family members may not provide recommendations.
