The revised United States Pharmacopeia (USP) General Chapter <797> became official on November 1, 2023. Here are key considerations for nutrition support clinicians related to the revised chapter.
Parenteral nutrition (PN) is not assigned a specific category in the revised chapter. If clinicians interpret that PN is Category 2, it is important to note that Category 2 compounded sterile preparations have a maximum beyond use date (BUD) of 4 days at a controlled room temperature. This recommendation is based on sterility only, not stability.
Since the revised chapter does not address stability factors that shorten the BUD for PN, clinicians should maintain a BUD at 30 hours at a controlled room temperature as recommended in the previous chapter.
If questions arise regarding PN components or stability, contact the manufacturer to determine if internal data is available. Updates regarding the USP General Chapter <797> revision are available here.
