World Food Program Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

October 9, 2020

The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) congratulates the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. We are thrilled that their effort to combat malnutrition across the world has been duly recognized—and are especially delighted that it was awarded during our annual Malnutrition Awareness WeekTM, ASPEN’s global effort to educate healthcare professionals to intervene and treat malnutrition.

Much has been discussed this week about malnutrition—from nutrition support for the elderly, those with COVID-19 and other critically ill patients, to food insecurity. “The recognition of the U.N. World Food Program highlights the need for awareness and continued efforts to address this treatable condition caused by hunger and disease, further amplified by the pandemic and world disasters,” said Todd W. Rice, MD, MSc, ASPEN President. “On behalf of ASPEN, I congratulate the WFP on this prestigious prize and thank them for their leadership in this important cause.”
